Penny Nichols is the daughter of Christopher Nichols, a successful detective. Mr. Nichols often scoffs at Penny's ideas, but when Penny is proved to be right, Mr. Nichols has to admit that Penny has the makings of a good detective. Penny's best friend is Susan Altman, and Susan usually accompanies Penny in her adventures.

Penny Nichols is deeply interested in her father's new case. Christopher Nichols is a successful private investigator who has been hired by an insurance company to catch a gang of car thieves. Yet so far, Mr. Nichols has had no luck in tracking down the thieves.

Penny's curiosity only gets more intense after a tire is stolen from her car. Penny learns from the insurance adjustor that, incredibly, thirty other tires were stolen on the same day that her tire was stolen. Penny probes the adjuster with questions and decides to try to locate the thieves herself.

Penny takes several great risks, including following the suspected thieves into a vacant building. In the end, Penny cracks the case for her father and earns his appreciation.

The first in a set of four, this Penny Nichols book has Penny (15) and her detective dad, Christopher, trying to figure out who is behind all the auto accessory thefts in the town of Belton City where they reside. They know Rap Molberg and his gang are involved but catching them is another thing altogether and who else is involved?

Mrs. Gallup is the faithful housekeeper who has looked after them since Penny's mother died a few years ago. Susan Altman is Penny's best friend and in this story she purchases her first car but everything is not as it appears. Has she been conned? Penny's faithful old Roadster clocks up many miles as Penny follows and investigates. When following a car up a dead end road, where does it disappear to? Is there a secret entrance or is the building just as it appears? Penny believes in Jerry Barrows when she finds him hiding in their garage but why does he then avoid her in the future? Is someone threatening him or is he really a crook? Maybe he isn't who he say he is?!

The only thing I did not like about this book is that we never find out why Joe, Penny's assigned bodyguard, lost her on the last night of the mystery being solved. Where did he go?

Cleanly written with a great mystery and gas was only 20c a gallon! Wow!

Penny Nichols Finds a Clue Joan Clark 9781534666511 Books Reviews

I imagine other than teen-aged girls might well like it and some contemporary teen-aged girls will not. It is a well-written, private-fem-eye in training book, as the daughter of a private investigator gets in on one of his toughest cases. I can't judge what anyone else might like, but I thought it quite well written for the earlier teens. Possesses neither young love nor dead bodies. The author had vast experience writing for this age group.
The style takes me back. I enjoyed some of the colloquialisms of the day, such as "mugging" meaning taking a mug shot, not a thief bashing someone over the head. But I don't think the cars were ever such that taking a radiator cap off after pursuing the criminal until she almost ran out of gas wouldn't produce a geyser. But it was a charming read, and 20 cents per gallon gasoline and crooks willing to go to lots of trouble to steal wheels off every car in town spoke of a simpler time.
I just downloaded this book last night and already I'm finished with it. I can't say enough good things about it. It astounds me that only 4 Penny Nichols books were ever published. Penny is a charmer. She is so great, feisty and plucky. I like her a lot more than Nancy Drew because unlike Nancy Drew, she does have some faults. Plus the mystery was engaging and fast-moving. I am off to download the second book in the series. I will cry bitter tears when I have read them all. There should have been tons more!
This is the first volume in the Penny Nichols mysteries. In this mystery, Penny helps her detective father capture some thieves who are stealing car parts. Although Penny is a teenager, she was able to come up with information in solving the crime that even the police and some of her father's fellow detectives couldn't come up with. An enjoyable read. No one is murdered in this mystery. This book can be read in a day.
This is the first of the four books in this series by Mildred Wirt, aka Joan Clark and author of the first 20 Nancy Drew titles, and the best of the series in my opinion. She also wrote the Penny Parker series, some of the Kay Tracey's, The Dana Girls, and many other girls series books. I really enjoyed this book and wish there were more in this series. It's well written, interesting, and I highly recommend it to anybody interested in girls series books, or in 1930's America.
A rather good early century mystery, more for the young girl than the grown man. This book introduces us to Penny Nichols, a brash, undaunted young lady, with a flair for getting into mysterious circumstances. Very much in the manner of Nancy Drew or the Hardy Boys series. Fairly well written, with some interesting twists and turns. I enjoyed this for some light reading. With no murders or other gruesome crimes, this makes for a fairly light and amiable mystery read.
I often enjoy relaxing with book written for readers far younger than myself. I have really enjoyed my sisters Nancy Drew collection, the Patty Fairfield books, and the Runaway King just to name a few. This book did not end up being one of my favorites.

The mystery, I felt, was weaker than most Nancy Drews. Every crook has beady eyes and looks suspicious. I could have over looked that, this being a children's book. However, I really got irritated at how rude and bratty Penny was to her Dad. I like a character that has flaws and is spirited but Penny came off sounding spoiled and bratty to me. She interrupts her father, treats him bad, and her father sits there and takes it. It all would have been okay if Penny had apologized even once, or her father or friend had called her out on it. That didn't happen.

This book was a cute read, but not my favorite.
