I've never read a book quite like this and am literally blown away by what Jordan Myska Allen has done here. On one side it's a fictional zombie apocalypse novel with a great story line, plot, and cast of characters. And on the other side it is sequential layout to Integral Theory that introduces the reader to each level of Integral. You don't have to know or really care about Integral Theory to like or understand the book. I certainly don't know much about Integral but enjoyed the book immensely and was interested to learn more as I read the book.FYI - if you're not into philosophy the last couple chapters might be a bit slower to get through but keep reading. It's worth it!

Struck me as a millennial version of Boomeritis that transcended and included the former. Congrats Jordan, the student has become a teacher.
This is a very unusual genre the didactic novel. The function of this novel is to illustrate, in a concrete way, the 7 or 8 levels that that are described by Sprial Dynamics and popularized and expanded by Ken Wilber as part of his Integral Theory. Wilber himself attempted this a number of years ago in a novel called Boomeritis. I think Allen, while stylistically less daring, is more successful than Wilber. The great danger of a novel of this type is that there will be more telling than showing. With a simple picaresque formula, the main characters encounter groups of survivors of a zombie apocalypse (what fun!) at each of the levels of social organization from survival bands up to current Postmodern pluralism. The book ends with a level that is just emerging which is "Integral," meaning that it is not simply blindly enacting its level of development but sees itself and the other levels. This level of awareness allows this level to grant each of the other levels its own truth and to integrate them in itself. Though not stylistically daring, the characters are well-drawn and the various levels come alive. Overall the book succeeds in a very useful way. My own view is that this sort of analysis allows us to make sense of our present world in a way that holds out of some hope of surviving ourselves.
I had the pleasure of reading a draft of "A Beautiful Apocalypse" some time ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's a novel that's both transformative and highly entertaining, which is somewhat rare among "spiritual" or "evolutionary" books. If you're a fan of The Walking Dead, Ken Wilber, and/or conscious evolution in general, I'm pretty sure you'll love this novel!
A very entertaining read, first and foremost. I found this to be an incredibly ambitious, smartly-written book, with a most unusual mix of action and philosophy. I didn't connect with all aspects of the story, but I applaud the originality here. Zombies vs. Integral Theory? That's just weird, people. But somehow it all works in a way that's almost perfect. This is definitely a case of an author having something to say and not being afraid to say it.
Wow! I found this to be a beautiful book that strikes many crisp notes - a clear and compelling story, suspense and surprise, truly deep wisdom into the human experience that allows the reader to grow in practical, meaningful ways, a mind blowing final chapter, and a page-turner all the way through. I fell in love with this book. It satisfies some yearning I had to see such a powerful perspective painted in fiction - with a plot that inspires new, more nuanced and wise action in today's world. I feel propelled with new understanding. I'm thankful for this gift from the author )
Awesome book. I saw changes in myself as a result of reading it. If you love zombie movies and series, and the thought of personal development doesn't appeal to you that much, this is the book for you. Highly entertaining and thought provoking, this book will sneakily grow you like a ninja. If you *do* like Integral Theory and personal development, even better. It took the headiness out of Integral for me. I stopped trying to figure out where I am, and where others are, developmentally; and instead relaxed into a pretty down-to-earth trust. Highly recommended.
This book provides an enjoyable, well written, and creative introduction into Integral Theory. It inspired me to dig deeper into the theory and learn how viewing the world through an integral lens both simplifies and enriches life. Since reading this novel, I have become more accepting of both myself and others in where I/we are at individually and collectively in our evolution. Integral theory also opens the door to real growth and seeing the possibility in all situations, people, processes, and systems. Jordan Myska Allen has done a superb job at presenting Integral Theory in a way that is fun, easy to grasp, and highly applicable. Be prepared.. there is a good chance that you'll find yourself thinking in a whole new way that lends to possibility and solution. Highly recommended!!
