Many books have been written about Juan Ponce de Leon. Many of them fall short because not enough research has been done on the man's life, his ancestors and who his legitimate wife was. The author has spent over ten years researching within the Ministry of Culture Spain to retrieve documents and has come away with some new and exciting discoveries. This book has been written for the historian as well as the amateur genealogist. John Browne Ayes is an experienced Biogeographical DNA Genealogist and Paleographologist. He has had his yDNA and mtDNA tested and has used the scientific results to empower his research and discovery project which is his personal family genealogy.

Juan Ponce de Leon His New and Revised Genealogy John J Browne Ayes 9780557466535 Books

An EARNEST warning to any perspective buyer, especially to any serious student of genealogy: This overpriced read is an amateur's fanciful take on an alternate origin to the Adelantado of La Florida as well as others in the Ponce de Leon family. Browne Ayes' poorly written findings show serious errors, such as asserting Christopher Columbus' and Hernan Cortes' ties to the Ponce de Leon family. In both cases, he assumes too much, basing these connections to men with similar names, but who in fact lived thousands of miles to where they should have been, or to "couples" who in actuality had married others and not the ones he claims. Brown Ayes had a very good source, having used a lot of his speculation off the free online Spanish Archives (PARES.MCU.ES), however, this opportunistic author's feeble research skills do his work in, in a very bad way. Advice (for myself as well the next time): Do your homework on the author first before you decide to buy a book, especially when the title itself makes enormous claims.

It is a great book to have in one's library.
For those who do genealogy and/or are descendants of Ponce de Leon
it has a lot of information. Also great for history buffs.

Hi Mr. Ayes,

This is just a note to see if I have the correct e-mail address.

I purchased your amazing book on Juan Ponce de Leon.

I am from the Nichols Ponce de Leon line in the Floridas, and have

a few questions, if you don't mind.

Waiting your reply,

Hi John,
Hope youre doing OK, haven't contacted you in a while!
I just wanted to let you know that last week I received a military
file from the Archivo General Militar de Segovia for one of my great
grandfathers, Don Atanasio Quadra. It includes a request for a
marriage licsense for him and includes a Probaza or Pureza de Sangre
of one of my great grandmothers, Maria Josef Quinones de Matos. In
that Probanza theres evidence that she is a descendant of Don Antonio
de los Reyes Correa, the famous Captain Correa from Arecibo.
Researching Capt. Correa I found out that he was a descendant of Ponce
de Leon. Now your book comes handy! I have to revisit your book.

Let me start by saying that the author doesn't have the credentials that make him a genealogy researcher. That is OK, and as long as those who buy it understand that this is the result of a hobby, the book doesn't disappoint. The author does provide documentation for a few things, documentation that can be accessed and checked. As with most books of this type, the author is interested in connecting himself to Juan Ponce de Leon. This is not necessarily bad, but given the stats, Juan Ponce de Leon would have more than 100,000+ descendants today, so a few of you reading this might also be descendants of this man and not know it!! As for Ponce de Leon, well, he is my 14thgreat grandfather, so there you go. The author and I are part of that 100,000+ clan of descendants. So, for a good read, some sources, and some good dreaming, the book doesn't disappoint!
For those who are interested in finding who their ancesters were in the genealogy of Puerto Rico and their personal own, this would be the place to start. Mr. John Browne ayes has spent more than ten years of his life if not more in the chronology, genealogy and documented research of our Main land Spain and Puerto Rico, tracing every step of our connected lifeline leading us to Juan Ponce De Leon. Starting with our own Native Americans, the Arawak Tainos, pre-christian era in the land of Tarsus( Spain), to the Moors and crusaders, and the discovery of our Americas! He offers to us the adventures and dramas that our ancesters unfolded before us and the education that we so hungrily yearned for. He offers to us an open book and leads us to our own self discovery in what our genealogy could be and entail. If you want to start your own investigation Like Mr. Ayes encourages, then, start with your own DNA and that should give you a starting point along with this "MAP" (as it were)relative to his book. Thank you Mr. john Browne Ayes for your intense research and dedicated hours. - Sonia Rodriguez Maldonado ( your Long distant cousin)
GREAT!
Very detailed information and lots of useful historical facts. We loved the copies of original documents.

We were disappointed that the book did not list his more current descendents. We used to have a genealogy almost to present-day and had hoped this book could replace that lost copy or give us somewhere to go for that info.
I recently bought this book out of interest of knowing more about the history of the conquistador, and first governor of Puerto Rico. I'm an amateur genealogist and this book offers good insight on how to make a deep genealogical research using spanish records. The author uses primary sources and includes images of the records, I just can't imagine the time and effort of going through them.
